| Fifth District Commander's Letter
I am very excited, honored and proud to be the commander of the Fifth District. 5D is home to a rich and diverse mix of residential neighborhoods, educational institutions, recreational facilities, houses of worship and national landmarks. But most importantly, 5D is home to a wonderful mix of people—people who want and deserve to live in safe and healthy communities that are free of crime and disorder.
Over the last few years, 5D has experienced a significant reduction in serious crime. This has been achieved through strong partnerships among police officers, residents and other community stakeholders. We have achieved a lot, but there is still a lot more to be accomplished. Crime—especially violent crime—is still far too high in many of our communities, and far too many of our residents continue to live in fear. Continuing to bring down the crime rate, while also alleviating the level of fear in our communities, are my top priorities as commander.
I realize that these goals will not be achieved by the Police Department alone or by residents or other government agencies working in isolation. We will achieve safer, healthier and less fearful neighbhorhoods when we come together and work together as a team. I know that the residents of 5D share my vision for community safety. I look forward to meeting with you, to discussing our common goals and objectives, and—most importantly—to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on making 5D a model of community policing in our city.
I encourage all of you to actively participate in our PSA meetings, our problem-solving groups and other community policing activities. And please do not hesitate to contact my office if you need assistance or if you have ideas on how 5D can improve our services to the community. Our doors are always open.
