The Asian Liaison Unit (ALU) acts as a conduit between the Police Department and the Asian community in the Washington, DC area. The unit is staffed by Sergeant Kenny Temsupasiri, one community outreach specialist and five sworn officers. The members of the ALU, sworn and civilian, staff speak Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese Cantonese, and Thai. The unit was officially established as the Asian Liaison Unit on March 4, 1996. The Asian Liaison Unit is not a full police station, but the officers are deployed to provide their police service in all districts.
Chief Cathy L. Lanier remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and well being of every person who lives, works and recreates in the District. Her commitment includes those members of our community who are served by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Liaison Units. On October 5, 2007, as part of her departmental reorganization and her long-term commitment to the expansion of the units, Chief Lanier has created a centralized command of the units which will fall directly under the Executive Office of the Chief of Police.
The Special Liaison Unit will be comprised of the department’s current liaison units, Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU), Latino Liaison Unit (LLU), Asian Liaison Unit (ALU) and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Unit (DHHU). All four units will fall under the supervision of Sergeant Brett Parson, who will work out of the Executive Office of the Chief of Police. The unit’s day-to-day operations will still be supervised by their current leaders, Sergeant Tania Bell (GLLU), Sergeant Carlos Mejia (LLU), Sergeant Kenny Temsupasiri (ALU) and Officer Myra Jordan (DHHU). The units will also continue to deploy from their current locations throughout the city and maintain their citywide functions and missions. The GLLU, LLU, ALU and DHHU were previously operating under separate command structures with each unit under different leadership.
Responsibilities of the unit include:
-
conducting outreach to Asian community and update their emergency notification in all districts;
-
general police operations in the Chinatown area and citywide;
-
