GLLU website
The GLLU has been in existence since June 2000. The unit is staffed by openly gay and lesbian members of the department and their allies. The GLLU is dedicated to serving the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) communities in the Washington Metropolitan Area and the Metropolitan Police Department. The unit also serves as a resource for other law enforcement agencies nationwide.
In addition to providing 24-hour response to members of the GLBT community and the Metropolitan Police Department, the GLLU also:
-
advises the Chief of Police on issues surrounding the GLBT community;
-
serves as a representative for the Metropolitan Police Department at any community event, civic meeting, government function, or other related event;
-
serves on the Hate Crimes Task Force;
-
visits gay owned/operated businesses, corporations, associations, or any other group that seeks the support or assistance of the GLLU;
-
provides support and assistance with investigations which involve members of the GLBT community;
-
provides support to other city agencies with regard to enforcement within the GLBT community;
-
provides the training and education to the GLBT community and members of the Metropolitan Police Department; and
-
serves as mentors and peer counselors to (youth and adult) members of the GLBT community.
The GLLU is an evolving unit within the Metropolitan Police Department. Please call upon us! We are here in the community for you.
